Terms

Last updated 12 October 2026

In short: Prose is free to use on your Mac. Pro is a subscription you can cancel at any time, and you can get a refund within 14 days of any payment. Use it for your own writing, not to abuse the service. These terms are governed by French law, and your rights as a consumer always apply.

1. Who we are

Prose is made and sold by Mathieu Maree, a sole trader (entrepreneur individuel) registered in France under SIRET 810 568 006 00037. In these terms, "we" means Mathieu Maree and "you" means the person using Prose. Contact: [email protected]. Full details are in the legal notice.

2. What Prose is

Prose is a dictation app for macOS. You hold a key, speak, and Prose types the text into the app you are using. It comes in two modes:

3. Your licence

We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use Prose on Macs you own or control. A Pro subscription can be active on up to 3 Macs at a time. You may not resell, rent, or share your licence key, copy or redistribute the app, or try to extract its source code, except where the law allows it.

4. Trial

New users get Pro for their first 10,000 dictated words, with no card and no account needed. When the trial ends, Prose switches back to free mode on its own; nothing is charged.

5. Subscription, prices and payment

6. Cancelling and refunds

You can cancel at any time from the customer portal (Settings › Plan › Manage in the app, or the link in your receipt). Pro stays active until the end of the period you paid for, then Prose returns to free mode. Refunds are described on the refunds page.

7. Fair use

Pro is meant for one person's own dictation. To keep the service working for everyone, we may slow down or pause Pro for an account that is clearly automated, shared, or far beyond any normal personal use. Prose then keeps working in free mode, and we will contact you first when we can. You also agree not to use Prose to break the law or to harm others.

8. Your content

What you dictate is yours. We claim no rights over it. You are responsible for what you dictate and where you send it.

9. Updates and availability

Prose updates itself with improvements and fixes. Pro depends on online services and an internet connection, so it may sometimes be slow or unavailable; when it is, Prose falls back to free mode so you still get your text. We may change or stop features, and will give you reasonable notice of any change that matters to a paid subscription.

10. Warranty and liability

Speech recognition is never perfect: always check important text before you send it. Prose is provided as it is, within the limits allowed by law. We are not liable for indirect losses, or for losses caused by text you did not check. Our total liability to you is limited to what you paid us in the 12 months before the problem. Nothing in these terms limits your legal rights as a consumer, or our liability where the law does not allow it to be limited.

11. Ending these terms

You can stop using Prose at any time. We may end your access if you seriously or repeatedly break these terms, after telling you why when we can. If we end a paid subscription for any other reason, we refund the unused part.

12. Changes to these terms

If we change these terms in a way that matters, we will tell you in the app or by email before the change applies. The date at the top always shows the latest version.

13. Law and disputes

These terms are governed by French law. If something goes wrong, write to us first at [email protected]; we will try to fix it. If you live in the EU you can also use a consumer mediator, and you can always go to the courts of your place of residence.
