In short: there's no account. In free mode, your voice and your screen never leave your Mac. With Pro, the recording and a short excerpt of what's on screen are sent to our speech and AI providers to write your text, then discarded. We don't sell anything, we don't use your words to train AI, and this website has no cookies or trackers.
Who is responsible
Mathieu Maree, sole trader (entrepreneur individuel), SIRET 810 568 006 00037, France. For anything about your data: [email protected].
Free mode: everything stays on your Mac
- Your voice is turned into text on your Mac. The recording is kept in memory only while you dictate, then discarded.
- Your screen: to spell names and terms right, Prose reads the text of the window you're dictating into, using macOS's accessibility features. When an app doesn't expose its text, Prose may read an image of the window, also on your Mac. This screen text is used for that one dictation and isn't saved.
- On your Mac only: Prose keeps a history of your dictations (the text, which app it went into, and when) and a list of the unusual names it has seen on your screen over the last 30 days, so it can spell them right next time. Both stay in Prose's folder on your Mac, are never sent anywhere, and can be deleted from the app.
Pro: what is sent, and to whom
Pro gets its accuracy from online services. For each dictation, Prose sends, over an encrypted connection:
- the audio of that dictation, to OpenAI and Deepgram, to turn it into text;
- the text it heard plus a short excerpt of the context (the window's visible text, the text just before your cursor, the names Prose has learned, and your last few dictations in that app) to OpenAI, which removes hesitations, fixes names and punctuation, and returns your final text.
These providers process the data only to return your text. They don't use it to train their models. OpenAI may keep it for up to 30 days to detect abuse, then deletes it. Nothing is sent when Prose isn't dictating, and nothing at all is sent in free mode.
Your subscription
- Payments are handled by Polar (polar.sh), our merchant of record, and its payment partner Stripe. We never see your card details. Polar shares with us your email address, your country, and what you bought.
- Licence check: once a day, Prose sends your licence key and an identifier for this Mac's activation to Polar to check your subscription is active.
- Trial: the number of words used in your trial is kept on your Mac.
Updates
Once a day, Prose checks speakprose.app for a new version. That request includes the app's version and your macOS version, nothing else.

Why we're allowed to (legal bases)
- Processing your dictations and your subscription: to provide the service you asked for (contract).
- Keeping invoices: legal obligation (10 years under French accounting law, handled by Polar).
- Protecting the website and the service from abuse: our legitimate interest.
Data sent outside the EU
OpenAI, Deepgram, Polar's payment partner and Cloudflare may process data in the United States. These transfers rely on the EU–US Data Privacy Framework or the European Commission's standard contractual clauses.
Your rights

Data on your Mac is in your hands: delete it from the app, or remove Prose. If you're not satisfied, you can complain to the CNIL (cnil.fr) or your local data protection authority.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that matters, we'll tell you in the app before it applies. The date at the top always shows the latest version.
